Why vaccinate your rabbit?
Veterinarian Laura de Haan explains:
“There are two serious contagious diseases in the rabbit. These are myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD).
Myxomatosis is caused by a virus and is transmitted by blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes and fleas or by direct contact with infected wild rabbits. Infected animals may develop swollen eyelids, swollen lips, small swellings on the inside of the ear and thick swellings around the anus and genitals. Within a few days, the swelling around the eyes can become so severe that they can cause blindness. Eating and drinking then becomes increasingly difficult and the disease can lead to death within 2 weeks.
About 10% heal with treatment.
RHD can be transmitted by direct contact with infected wild rabbits or stinging insects. The virus can also survive in the environment for months and can be transmitted through green forage, hay, straw and contaminated clothing. RHD is also caused by viruses namely RHD1 and RHD2. In both variants, rabbits die very quickly, often without any signs of disease, except for a few hours when they are lethargic and listless. If rabbits live longer, they can develop fever and convulsions, leading to a fatal coma. Sometimes some bloody discharge from the nose is observed just before death. The course of RHD is so rapid that treatment is not possible. “
Would you like to have your rabbit vaccinated? You can make an appointment at the practice for this.
