PATIENT OF THE MONTH - DAPPER
This month’s patient is the special Fjord mare Dapper. Her owner Rianne takes us along in their story:
“On April 3, 2015, Good Friday, our special Dapper was born. Fortunately I was at birth, because everything went wrong and due to complications, Dapper did not breathe at birth. Fortunately she recovered thanks to resuscitation, but unfortunately she turned out to be paralyzed.
The vet wanted to put her to sleep right away, but “give up” is not in my dictionary.
I have previously had a horse that was given up, this was Notre Belle. Eva (Eva Keeman, therapist at Den Hoek) and Eric Laarakker then ensured that she could eventually reach 19.5 years of age.
I also wanted to give that opportunity to Dapper. The first step was to wrap PVC pipes around her legs so she could stand and drink from Mommy. Her mother and father were kept in a nature reserve with the rest of the herd, but we had to separate Dapper and her mother for a while. Fortunately, that went well and Dapper was well cared for by her mother.
On Easter Monday we removed the PVC pipes and miraculously Dapper galloped after her mother into the meadow world. Such a beautiful moment! I’ll never forget that.
Na een jaar heb ik besloten om Dapper naar huis te halen. We zagen dat ze wat zwakker was dan de rest en dat het natuurgebied niet veilig voor haar was. Thuis hebben we haar veel geleerd en Dapper groeide uit als een vrolijke en ondernemende puber. Maar helaas bleef ze met 4 benen kreupel lopen. Ze liep wel vrolijk door het land en leek er dus geen last van te hebben, maar haar benen gingen alle kanten op.
Toen Dapper 3 jaar was zijn we voor het eerst naar Den Hoek gegaan. Samen met Annika (Annika ten Napel, dierenarts geweest bij Den Hoek) heeft Eric Dapper doorgemeten en nagekeken. Mijn doel was om haar een pijnloos leven te geven of het nu als grasmaaier en knuffelpaard was of als menpaard dat maakte voor mij niet uit. Ik had mij er al bij neergelegd dat ik nooit op Dapper zou kunnen zitten, zelfs een dekje was op dat moment al te zwaar voor haar.
Conclusies van Annika en Eric: Dapper komt van ver, maar heeft nog geen pijn.
Rondom haar SI-gewricht zat het niet goed. De kans was klein dat zij ooit goed zou gaan lopen, maar we wilden alle 3 die kleine kans tóch aanpakken. Dapper deed haar naam eer aan en wilde zelf ook zeker niet opgeven dus zijn we ervoor gegaan!
Na de eerste paar behandelingen knapte ze iets op, maar viel ook al snel weer helemaal terug.
Elke 8 à 10 weken kwam ik op de praktijk voor haar behandelingen. Ondertussen beëindigende Annika helaas haar werkzaamheden binnen de praktijk, maar gelukkig vonden we in dierenarts Chantal Rijkhoff een goede opvolger. Samen met Chantal gingen we nu doorvechten voor Dapper.
When I was back at the practice last year and Dapper’s results were not so positive, we had to make a choice. When the word euthanize was mentioned by me, Dapper got very angry. She was stamping and shaking her head no. This was a clear sign for me, we will continue !!!
Eric came up with the idea to implant gold beads at Dapper and we did. She needed a lot of gold beads. In the time after that it went with ups and downs.
She was bravely lasered to make and keep her muscles stronger and I lunged her once a week. She was also on the land. More and more the good days came to dominate and the usual things that all horses can do, Dapper could now also slowly handle. After 3 years, Dapper was finally able to roll, buck, prance and get in heat! Everything seems so obvious, but for a horse like Dapper it was very special.
And now, almost a year after the gold beads, we have a completely different horse.
She wants to work !! Because Dapper still stumbles and sometimes falls, we dare not put her in front of the cart, but Dapper no longer accepts to stand on the land and only be lunged. We are now working with her every day. A variety of groundwork, walking, exercises, walking bars and RIDING !! We are now so far that my niece of 40 kilos can ride Dapper once a week for about 15 minutes, so we can make her stronger and stronger.
