Winter and Kidney Energy

The kidneys are known as an important filter for the body; they ensure that waste products are processed and disposed of. The kidneys filter the blood where wastes are carried to the bladder and eventually leave the body through the urine. The good substances return to the bloodstream. The kidneys also play an important role in maintaining fluid balance.

From the Chinese element teachings Wu Xing, bladder and kidney belong to the emotion of fear, the element of Water. Anxiety produces a strong response to the adrenal glands. Too much anxiety/stress for too long can lead to adrenal exhaustion. The adrenal glands are connected to the kidneys; therefore, they are also an energetic unit with the kidneys. It is widely known in Western medicine that the adrenal glands play a central role in the production of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. If the adrenal glands are depleted, symptoms such as recurrent bladder infections may develop.

In dogs that act out of fear, known as fear biters, it may be helpful in some cases to also treat/support kidney energy.

According to Chinese medicine, kidney energy is also related to bones, joints and lower back pain. For example, back pain can result from prolonged anxiety and stress, but it can also arise during the change of seasons.

The kidneys, which are located in the area of the lower back, are also very sensitive to cold and this further intensifies the symptoms we see during wet and cold periods. Therefore, it is important to keep animals with joint and/or kidney problems well warm during cold periods, such as with the help of blankets.
There are many acupuncture points around joints. Energy can be exchanged at these points, but the inward penetration of energy is particularly important here.

Cold and wind can enter a joint and cause a “cold” and stiff joint. Therefore, there are often more joint problems in the winter. The most common complaints are often having difficulty getting up and taking longer to become flexible.

From acupuncture, the kidneys provide healthy bones and the spleen provide healthy and flexible joint fluid. Therefore, if one of these two organs becomes unbalanced, joint problems are more likely to occur.

Rest rusts! In addition to keeping warm, exercise is very important. Movement ensures that the blood flow continues and the joints remain warm and supple. Kidney energy can be further supported by supplements.
