Sand in the intestines in horses

Horses almost always ingest sand with food.

This is not a problem for very small amounts; it is then disposed of with the manure.
Most problems due to sand in the intestines are often seen in the fall and winter.

The pastures become more sparse and the horses eat more sand along with the blades of grass that are still there. Also, many horses are in the paddock, where there is more sand to be licked/eaten.
